Caring for your wooden goods

Cleaning and Care

It is not difficult to clean and care for your wooden spoon or bowl. Below are simple steps to keeping them looking good and able to be used.

1. No dishwasher!. A dishwasher will rot out your wooden good, don't put wooden items in a dishwasher.

2. Wash by hand in hot soapy water. Use a mild dish soap.

3. Use a soft cloth generally, especially for softer woods. For harder woods like Teak, then a more abrasive cloths or brush is fine. Avoid a steel scrubber.

4.Don't soak them. Don't leave a wooden bowl or wooden spoon to soak. Doing so can lead to cracks in the wood or the oil in the wood being leached out. Wash them quickly but thoroughly and then take out of the water.

5. Dry thoroughly. Dab them dry with a dish towel / tea towel and then leave them out to air dry thoroughly before putting them away.  don't dry in direct sunlight. Don't put away damp.

6. Oil with a food safe oil. How often depends on how often you use and then wash your wooden spoon or wooden chopping board, the use and washing will draw out the natural oils in the wooden utensil.

7.You do not need a lot of oil but you should oil the entire wooden spoon or wooden spatula or whatever wooden utensil you have been using. Let the oil soak in before you put it away.

8. Try and avoid olive oil as it can go rancid. A light non fatty oil or a food safe mineral oil are best.

9. Some people use beeswax or a beeswax and oil mixture, and these are fine but need to be food safe.

We use Pure Nature Food Grade Mineral Oil, you can purchase online here if you wish.  Note, we have no affiliation with Pure Nature, other than we purchase their oil to use on our wooden utensils.
